How Generic Motrin (Ibuprofen) Drug Works
Generic Motrin (Ibuprofen) contains the active ingredient ibuprofen, which belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
It works by blocking the action of a substance in the body called cyclo-oxygenase. Cyclo-oxygenase is involved in the production of various chemicals in the body, some of which are known as prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are produced in response to injury or certain diseases and would otherwise go on to cause pain, swelling and inflammation. Ibuprofen is therefore used to relieve pain and inflammation.
All the medicines in this group (NSAIDs) reduce inflammation caused by the body's own immune system, and are effective pain killers. Ibuprofen can be used to relieve pain such as muscular aches and pains, period pains, headache, backache, rheumatic pain, dental pain and neuralgia. It can also reduce feverishness and the symptoms of colds and flu.
How Generic Motrin (Ibuprofen) Taken
Ibuprofen comes as a tablet and liquid to take by mouth. It usually is taken three or four times a day for arthritis or every 4-6 hours as needed for pain. Follow the directions on the package or prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Motrin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than directed by the package label or prescribed by your doctor. If you think that you need more medication to relieve your symptoms, call your doctor.
If you obtained Motrin without a prescription, do not take it for more than 3 days for fever or 10 days for pain without talking to a doctor.
If you are taking Motrin for pain and the painful area becomes red or swollen, call your doctor.
Possible Generic Motrin (Ibuprofen) Side Effects
Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. - Headache
- Rash
- Blood disorders
- Disturbances of the gut such as diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain
- Indigestion (dyspepsia)
- Retention of water in the body tissues (fluid retention), resulting in swelling (oedema)
- Dizziness
- Damage to the kidneys
- Death of the outer layer of the skin (epidermal necrolysis)
- Bleeding from the stomach or intestine
- Liver disorders
- Allergic reactions such as skin rash, swelling of the lips, tongue and throat (angioedema) or narrowing of the airways (bronchospasm)
- Stomach or duodenal ulcer

Generic Motrin (Ibuprofen) Warnings/Precautions
For the majority of women, Generic Motrin (Ibuprofen) can be taken safely. But some women are at high risk of developing certain serious diseases that can be life threatening or may cause temporary or permanent disability or death. The risks associated with taking Generic Motrin (Ibuprofen) increase significantly if you:
- Smoke
- Have high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol
- Have or have had clotting disorders, heart attack, stroke, chest pain (angina pectoris), and cancer of the breast or reproductive organs, jaundice, or malignant or benign liver tumors.
Generic Motrin (Ibuprofen) Overdose
Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. An overdose of Motrin can be fatal. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
Symptoms of Motrin overdose may include:
Abdominal pain, breathing difficulties, coma, drowsiness, headache, irregular heartbeat, kidney failure, low blood pressure, nausea, ringing in the ears, seizures, sluggishness, vomiting
Generic Motrin (Ibuprofen) Drug Interactions
Ibuprofen may prevent the removal of lithium and methotrexate from the body, resulting in increased blood levels of these medicines.
There may be an increased risk of bleeding from the gut if ibuprofen is taken with blood thinning or anti-clotting medicines such as warfarin.
There may be an increased risk of side effects such as stomach irritation if ibuprofen is taken with corticosteroids such as prednisolone.
Ibuprofen may decrease the blood pressure lowering effects of amlodipine and possibly other antihypertensive medicines.
The use of ibuprofen with diuretics, ACE inhibitors or ciclosporin may increase the risk of kidney problems.
NSAIDs should not be used within 8-12 days of taking mifepristone.
Ibuprofen should not be taken with any other NSAID, due to an increased risk of side effects.
Generic Motrin (Ibuprofen) Missed Dose
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Generic Motrin (Ibuprofen) Storage
Keep out of the reach of children.
Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Keep container tightly closed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
