Before Using Acyclovir

Common Use of Acyclovir
- 1- For the treatment of initial episodes of GENITAL HERPES
- 2- HERPES ZOSTER (Shingles)
- 3- CHICKENPOX (Varicella)
- 4- For the management of recuurent episodes of GENITAL HERPES It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor
How to Use Acyclovir
- Use Acyclovir exactly as directed on the label, unless instructed differently by your doctor
- Start taking Acyclovir as soon as possible after the onset of signs or symptoms.
- Acyclovir should be taken WITH a full glass of water (6-8oz).
- Acyclovir can be taken with or without food, regardless of meal times. If stomach upset occurs, take with food.
- Use Acyclovir for the full prescribed treatment period. Never skip Acyclovir doses or discontinue unless directed by your doctor.
- Acyclovir is NOT A CURE. Patients need long-term management.
- Notify physician if symptoms do not improve, or if they become worse.
Acyclovir Missed Dose
- Take when remembered unless time for next dose. Double dosing can be lethal and harmful.
Acyclovir Storage
- Keep in original closed container in a dark, cool, and dry place away from children. Discard unneeded medicine.

- Changes in urination frequency or amount.
Acyclovir Side Effects - Skin rash; Shakiness; Dizziness; Unusual tiredness or weakness; Jerkings of face, trunk, or extremities; Vomiting; Feeling of
general discomfort; Diarrhea; Nausea; Headache; Sore throat; Loss of consciousness (fainting); Liver function tests
abnormalities; Insomnia; Depression; Confusion; Jitteriness; Decreased appetite.

Safety of use during pregnancy has not been established. Acyclovir SHOULD NOT BE USED DURING PREGNANCY unless benefit
justifies potential risk to the fetus. CALL YOUR DOCTOR.
Patients with genital herpes (a sexually transmitted disease) should AVOID INTERCOURSE when lesions/ symptoms are present to
avoid infecting partners.
Genital Herpes infection can be spread during sexual activity even in the absence of symptoms and more likely if sores are
present.
Acyclovir is CONTRAINDICATED in patients who are receiving other nephrotoxic drugs.
Because of INTERACTION with other drugs, report the use of any other prescription and nonprescription medicines to your
doctor.
