Colchicine is a prescription medication for acute gout. In acute gouty, there is a marked inflammatory response to the presence of uric acid crystals, causing severe pain, redness, and swelling of the affected joint(s). Colchicine is helpful for suppressing the arthritic inflammation in acute gout.

Before Using Colchicine
Take Colchicine exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
Colchicine Directions
To prevent upset stomach, take this medication with food or milk. Pain medications work best in preventing pain before it occurs. Once the pain becomes intense, the medication is not as effective in relieving it. Take this as prescribed. Do not increase your dose or take it more frequently without your doctor's approval.

Colchicine Side Effects
Colchicine is usually well tolerated. Drowsiness, dizziness, unsteadiness, fatigue or nausea may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor.
Unlikely to occur but report promptly: mental or mood changes, tingling or numbness of the hands or feet, swelling of ankles, vision problems, fever, unusual bleeding.
Very unlikely to occur but report promptly: fainting, difficulty moving, stiffness, uncontrolled movements, stomach or abdominal pain, leg pain, chest pain, trouble breathing.
If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Colchicine Drug interactions
Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or medication you use, especially of: other medication for seizures, antacids. Because antacids may interfere with the absorption of Colchicine, it is best to take gabapentin at least 2 hours after taking an antacid. Do not take them at the same time.
Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Colchicine Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include vomiting, excessive sweating, dark urine, stomach pain, extreme fatigue, unusual drowsiness or dizziness, lack of feeling alert, slow or shallow breathing, cold or clammy skin, and loss of consciousness.
