Penicillin VK Clinical Description
Penicillin V potassium is the potassium salt of penicillin V. This chemically improved form combines acid stability with immediate solubility and rapid absorption. It is designated 4-thia-1-azabicyclo[3.2.0]-heptane-2-carboxylic acid, 3,3 -dimethyl-7-oxo-6-[(phenoxyacetyl)amino]-, monopotassium salt, [2S-(2a,5a,6b)]-. The empirical formula for Penicillin V potassium is C16H17KN2O5S, and its molecular weight is 388.48.
Penicillin VK Ingredient
Each tablet contains penicillin V potassium equivalent to 250 mg (400,000 units) or 500 mg (800,000 units) penicillin V. The tablets also contain lactose, magnesium stearate, povidone, starch, stearic acid, and other inactive ingredients.

On consumption of Penicillin VK hypersensitivity, including fatal anaphylaxis, have been observed during the clinical trials. Cross sensitivity may occur with cephlasporins and other beta lactam antibiotics. Consult your doctor in such cases before starting Penicillin VK medication. Penicillin VK medication should be stopped if any allergic reaction occurs during medication. Oral therapy should not be relied upon in patients with severe illness, or with nausea, vomiting, gastric dilation, achalasia or intestinal hypermotility. Sometimes patients do not absorb therapeutic amounts of orally administered penicillin. Administer with caution in the presence of markedly impaired renal function, due to the increased risk of encephalopathy.
Prolonged use of Penicillin VK may promote the over growth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. If super infection occurs, appropriate measures should be taken. Consult your doctor thoroughly before starting Penicillin VK medication.
Penicillin VK Drug Interaction
Penicillin VK may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. Tetracyclines, erythromycins, lincomycins all reduce the antimicrobial effectiveness of Penicillin VK. Aspirin, probenecid, and butazolidin may potentiate Penicillin VK's potency. Penicillin may potentiate coumadin and tandearil effects.
